Tigers Advance to Quarterfinals
ADEL, Iowa — The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Tigers continued their remarkable season with a hard-fought 27–24 victory over the North Scott Lancers in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Friday night at Tiger Stadium. Behind a dominant ground performance from senior running back Reed Obstarczyk, ADM powered its way to a 9–1 record and a spot in the state quarterfinals.
Obstarczyk Ignites Fast Start
The Tigers wasted no time setting the tone on their home turf. On ADM's second play from scrimmage, Obstarczyk burst through the line and sprinted 56 yards to the end zone, electrifying the home crowd. Later in the first quarter, he capped another drive with a 6-yard scoring run. The two early touchdowns sandwiched a 31-yard field goal from North Scott's Cole Green, giving ADM a 13–3 lead after one quarter.
Lancers Battle Back
North Scott responded in the second quarter behind junior running back Jonas Schlichting, who broke free for a 19-yard touchdown run to narrow the gap. The Tigers' offense stalled before halftime, and ADM held a slim 13–10 lead at the break.
The Lancers struck again to open the second half. Junior quarterback Miller Haedt connected with classmate Ryan Block for a 66-yard touchdown, pushing North Scott in front for the first time at 17–13.
Fourth Quarter Fireworks
ADM regained the lead on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Senior quarterback Hudson Shull hit junior receiver Reid Kluesner in stride for a 77-yard touchdown, putting the Tigers up 20–17. But North Scott quickly answered as Haedt found senior receiver Brady Hubner on a screen pass that turned into an 80-yard score, swinging momentum back to the Lancers at 24–20 with just over seven minutes to play.
Needing a spark, Shull delivered once again — this time with his legs. Starting deep in ADM territory, he broke loose on a 49-yard touchdown run that put the Tigers ahead 27–24, a lead they would not relinquish.
Defense Seals the Win
The ADM defense made the decisive play late in the fourth. With North Scott driving inside the 20-yard line and threatening to take the lead, a trick play backfired when junior Ryder Maher's pass was intercepted by senior defensive back Jackson Pitzen, securing the Tigers' playoff victory.
