ADM Wins Season Opener Over Newton

ADM Wins Season Opener Over Newton

TheADM Tigers kicked off their football season with an down to the wire win over the Newton Cardinals on Friday night, securing a 13-8 victory in their home opener in Adel.  New Head Coach Doug Winkowitsch collected his first win at ADM.

The game began as a defensive standoff, with both teams trading possessions but failing to score in the first quarter. However, the Tigers broke the deadlock in the second quarter when Junior Quarterback Hudson Shull connected with Junior Reed Obstarczyk on a 43-yard touchdown pass, putting ADM ahead 7-0. The Tigers' momentum continued with Senior Linebacker Grant Engleman making a crucial interception off Newton's Senior Quarterback Caden Klein. As time expired in the first half, ADM's Kicker Ethan Asche nailed a 24-yard field goal, extending the Tigers' lead to 10-0 going into halftime.

The third quarter saw both defenses tighten up again, with no points added to the scoreboard. In the fourth quarter, Asche once again showed his reliability, hitting a second field goal to give the Tigers a 13-0 advantage. However, Newton was far from finished. The Cardinals engineered a determined drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by Klein, narrowing the score to 13-6. After a failed two-point conversion, Newton trailed by just seven points.

The ensuing kickoff put ADM in a precarious position as Senior Returner Wyatt Schweiger slipped, pinning the Tigers deep in their own territory. ADM struggled to move the ball and was forced to punt from their end zone. The Cardinals capitalized on the situation with Newton's Skyler Milheiser blocking Colby Simons' punt, setting up Newton with excellent field position and the chance to take the lead.

With the Tigers clinging to a 13-8 lead and six minutes left in the game, the pressure was on. Newton's hopes of a comeback were dashed when Leyton Gerleman intercepted Klein with 5:29 remaining, providing a critical defensive stop for ADM. Newton had one final opportunity, driving into the red zone in the final seconds, but Klein threw his third interception of the night, this time to Brayden Rynearson, sealing the Tigers' victory.

ADM's Shull threw for 157 yards, added 25 rushing yards, and recorded one passing touchdown. Tigers' Running Back Talen Harvey led the ground attack with 64 rushing yards.

With this win, ADM starts their season 1-0 and will return to their home field next Friday to face their rival, Winterset.
